Parenting Support

Birthline is a crisis oriented program which provides emotional support, material assistance and referrals to other community resources for any pregnant woman, as well as women and single fathers with small children.  We at Birthline recognize that choices made regarding an unplanned pregnancy can have a lifelong effect on all of those involved.  As a result, our counselors offer practical assistance and referrals to support them in their decisions. Birthline has beautiful choices to offer. Choices that will benefit not only the parents, but the child as well.

The thought of becoming a parent may seem overwhelming and difficult. You may feel this is not the time to have a baby. You may think, I’m too young, I need to finish school, how can I afford a baby, this was not part of my plan. There are challenges with every option in front of you. Yet, with the available resources and support, parenting might seem possible. We are here to encourage and support you throughout the pregnancy and beyond.

The San Diego County Black Infant Health (BIH) program works to improve African-American infant and maternal health, as well as decrease Black-White inequities and social inequities for women and infants.

​

Services

All BIH services are at NO COST and include:   

  • 10-week prenatal sessions for pregnant women.

  • 10-week postpartum sessions for new moms.

  • Healthy meals, transportation assistance, and other supportive resources during sessions.

  • Individual client plans that address the most important concerns in a woman's life.

  • Referrals to Public Health Nursing and other health and social services.

Eligibility

  • African-American women 

  • 26 or fewer weeks pregnant (30 weeks maximum)

  • 18 years of age or older

A program that provides support services for enrolled expectant or parenting students in order for them to succeed academically and improve parenting skills. This program also provides child care and development program for their children and gives local educational agencies in California opportunities to access resources from the time the students enter the program until graduation. Services include: childcare, support groups, nutrition education, and parenting and health education classes.

  • You are 18 years or younger

  • You have not graduated from high school

  • You live in San Diego County

  • You are expecting a baby (mother and fathers to be)

  • You are a teen parent (mother or father)​

Vista Community Clinic (VCC) has launched Dads’ Club, a program to help fathers succeed in the work force, become self-sufficient and forge close relationships with their children and family members.

Participants in Dads’ Club have access to a variety of free services and resources that will help them climb out of poverty and unemployment.

Program features include:

  • Guidance on how to improve engagement with their children, family members, and the community.

  • Employment training and skills development to improve job opportunities and upward economic mobility.

  • Referrals to social services agencies and programs to address mental health, substance abuse and trauma.

  • Workshops in character building, communication, parenting and conflict resolution.

  • Free enrollment assistance for health insurance and services such as CalFresh and CalWORKs.

Children grow and develop at different rates. It is important for parents and caregivers to know how their children are growing and if they are reaching important milestones. HDS helps support the health and development of young children and establish healthy patterns for life-long learning.

All families living in San Diego County with children age 0-5 years 11 months who have not entered Kindergarten are eligible for services.

Whether you’re a first time parent or you already have little ones at home, we have resources that can give you the tools you need to be a well-equipped parent. These resources are offered through our “Bridges” program. Our program teaches you important information about your pregnancy, your child, and parenting in general. For every lesson you complete, you earn coupons to shop in our store, where you can purchase the things you need to take care of your child.

You may have more questions than answers about parenting or maybe the thought of becoming a parent seems impossible to you at this time. We’ve talked to hundreds of clients who are concerned about things like this:

SANDAPP’s goals are to improve health outcomes for pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children; increase the rate of high school graduation; enhance parenting skills; prevent child abuse, neglect and family violence; promote youth development; and assist to prevent second unplanned pregnancies. Services are provided to both female and male teen parents.

The San Diego Breastfeeding Center is your one-stop shop for judgment-free breastfeeding support.  Our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) provide soon-to-be and new moms with compassionate guidance and education about breastfeeding and newborn care. Our classes, consultations, and support groups seek to nurture the relationship between mother and child and to help our moms feel confident and empowered.

We are now preferred providers for Aetna PPO, Tricare, and UCSD Managed Care. Check your policy to see if you are covered for breastfeeding consultations!
